Artist and activist, Katherine Homes (KT) left the nonprofit world where she worked in strategic partnerships, storytelling, development and fundraising, because she wanted to find a way to merge her love of art with her love of bringing attention to threatened species and wildlands. While she still spends a lot of her time in strategic partnerships and creative storytelling with a focus on sustainability and conservation, she's now a full time artist and business owner. After launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise funding for her solo music album, Speak - she gifted hats with her artwork on them to supporters- she launched her brand at a festival in Colorado. The hats took off and she couldn't think of a better platform: People walking around with billboards on their heads bringing attention to threatened species and wildlands. 5 years later the Katherine Homes brand can be found in stores all over the country, most notably working with Title Nine and REI. We are a small company with a loud voice and big dreams to help positively impact the natural world.

While exploring various artistry concepts within the space (smell, touch, taste, sight) it is evident that you can not sit within a forest without hearing sounds of birds, the wind rustling leaves, or a nearby creek. Sounds that truly transports you into the natural environment became the goal of this artistic endeavor.

Apple Tree and Siberian Elm Tree Slices
Yakisugi (also known as Shou Sugi Ban) literally translates to burned cedar and was used when there was not yet a synthetic product to protect a wood house. It is still used today to prevent decay, insect and mold infestation and improves fire retardancy.
The Yakisugi process is an incredible example of how humans can learn from nature and implement more environmentally forward methods into building production. It typically takes less than 5 minutes to burn the wood - the heat needs to exceed 250 degrees for lasting effects, but once the wood is burned it acts like a natural fire retardant.
Over the years wildfires have increased at an alarming rate, fire mitigation is crucial in protecting the forests. While a fire can be absolutely devastating, when managed properly there are many benefits.
Species like Fire Lily and Indian Paintbrush are just a few examples of wildflowers that are activated by fire. The canopy can open up allowing more sunlight to come through and the forest floor.
The Apple Tree and Siberian Elm Tree Slices in this piece were repurposed from diseased or storm damaged trees.
